What Veterans Should Know About Supplemental Whole Life Insurance
When most veterans think about life insurance, they think about what they had through the military. Maybe you carried SGLI while you were active. Maybe you converted to VGLI after you separated. But supplemental whole life insurance is a different tool entirely — and I want to make sure you understand how it works before you decide whether it makes sense for your family.
What Is Supplemental Whole Life Insurance?
Supplemental whole life insurance is a permanent life insurance policy that stays in force for your entire lifetime as long as premiums are paid. Unlike term insurance, which covers you for a set number of years and then expires, whole life insurance does not have an end date.
It is called supplemental because it is designed to work alongside coverage you may already have — not replace it. It can help fill gaps, provide an additional layer of protection, or give your family a dedicated resource for final expenses and other needs.
How It Differs From Term Insurance
- Term insurance covers you for a specific period — 10, 20, or 30 years. If you outlive the term, the policy ends and your family receives nothing.
- Whole life insurance is permanent. It does not expire. Your family is covered as long as the policy is active.
- Whole life also builds cash value over time, which term insurance does not.
Why Veterans Often Consider Supplemental Coverage
- SGLI ends when you separate from service. VGLI premiums increase significantly as you age.
- VA burial benefits cover some costs, but they do not cover everything.
- Spouses and dependents may have little or no coverage of their own.
- Some veterans want a policy with locked-in premiums that will not increase over time.
What to Look for When Considering a Policy
- Premium stability: Does the premium stay the same, or does it increase over time?
- Coverage amount: Is the death benefit enough to cover what your family would need?
- Underwriting requirements: Some policies require a medical exam. Others have simplified or guaranteed issue options.
- Cash value: Does the policy build cash value, and how does that work?
Eligibility, availability, and benefits vary depending on the product and the carrier. Product availability may vary by state.
A Note on VGLI and Other Options
VGLI is a legitimate option that many veterans use. However, VGLI premiums increase in five-year age brackets. For some veterans, a supplemental whole life policy with locked-in premiums can become more cost-effective over the long term. I am not here to tell you which option is right for you — I am here to make sure you understand all of your options.
What I Recommend as a Starting Point
If you have not reviewed your current life insurance situation since you left the military, that is the first step. Know what you have, what it covers, and what it costs. Then you can start asking whether there are gaps worth filling.
If you want to talk through your options, I am happy to have that conversation. Request your free veteran will and burial kit or schedule a consultation at Soldiers Legacy. I want to make sure your family has what they need — no matter what.
